The single best thing about basing yourself in Phuket is that you can wake up in a comfortable hotel bed and be swimming over coral by 10am. Five distinct island groups sit within day-trip range: Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island), Similan, Coral, and Racha. Each has a completely different character, a different season, and a very different price tag.

This is the complete guide we give our own guests — how to pick the right islands for your trip, what each one actually costs in 2026 (in INR and THB), how to choose between speedboat, catamaran, longtail and liveaboard, and a sample 3-day island-hopping itinerary that avoids the biggest tourist crush.

Which Islands Should You Pick?

If you only have one day, pick one group. If you have three, do all five with rest days between. Quick comparison:

Island group From Phuket Journey Best for Price (per adult) Best season
Phi Phi Chalong / Rassada 45–90 min Iconic scenery, Maya Bay ₹3,000–4,500 Nov–Apr
Phang Nga (James Bond) Ao Po / Bang Rong 45 min Karsts, kayaking, families ₹2,800–4,200 Year-round
Similan Khao Lak transfer + 90 min boat 3.5 hr each way Diving, snorkeling ₹4,500–7,500 Nov–15 May only
Coral Island Chalong 20 min Half-day, first-timers, kids ₹1,500–2,500 Year-round
Racha Yai & Noi Chalong 45 min Clear water, less crowded ₹2,800–4,000 Nov–Apr

Rates assume ₹2.4 = 1 THB and include hotel transfers, national park fees, lunch and gear.

1. Phi Phi Islands — The Iconic One

Two islands (Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh) plus a scatter of limestone stacks. Maya Bay reopened with a daily visitor cap; Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah are the newer stars. Read our full Phi Phi Islands Day Trip guide for the exact route we recommend.

Do it right:

  • Book a small-group speedboat (max 25 pax), not the 40+ pax cattle boats
  • Depart by 7:30am to beat the Krabi boats to Maya
  • Stay overnight on Phi Phi Don if you want to see the islands empty at sunrise

2. Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island

The most photographed seascape in Thailand — vertical limestone karsts rising from calm, emerald water. Best done as a combo trip that includes canoeing into Hong Island's hidden lagoons and lunch at the floating Muslim village of Ko Panyi. See our James Bond Island guide for departure points and boat sizes.

Why families love it: sheltered water, no rough sea, short boat rides, ready lunch. Kids 4+ can canoe with a guide.

3. Similan Islands — For Serious Snorkelers & Divers

Nine granite islands 65 km north-west of Phuket, in a marine national park. The water is genuinely Maldivian — 25m visibility, no plastic, big schools of tuna and reef sharks.

Critical: the park is closed 16 May – 14 Oct. Plan Nov–15 May only. See Similan Islands from Phuket for the day-trip vs 3-day liveaboard comparison.

4. Coral Island (Ko Hae)

The closest island to Phuket, 9 km off the south coast. Ideal for a half-day trip, first snorkel, or families with young children. Water sports available (parasailing, banana boat) but the coral itself has taken a hit — go for the beach, not the reef.

5. Racha Yai & Racha Noi

Our under-the-radar favourite. Racha Yai has the clearest, calmest water within an hour of Phuket, and Racha Noi (a bit further) has proper drift snorkeling and dive sites. Far fewer boats than Phi Phi.

Speedboat vs Longtail vs Catamaran vs Liveaboard

Vessel Best for Comfort Speed Cost Notes
Speedboat Phi Phi, Racha, Similan day Medium Fast ₹₹ Bumpy in rough sea
Longtail Phang Nga, Coral Low Slow Local, atmospheric, wet
Catamaran Sunset cruises, families High Medium ₹₹₹ Stable, luxurious
Liveaboard Similan / Surin (3–4 days) High N/A ₹₹₹₹ The best way to dive

Rule of thumb: for Phi Phi and Similan, always speedboat. For Phang Nga with kids or elders, catamaran or the classic big-boat "James Bond Deluxe". For sunset, always catamaran.

Sample 3-Day Island-Hopping Itinerary

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Phi Phi speedboat (Maya, Pileh, Bamboo) Return 4pm, pool rest Seafood at Rawai
2 Rest day: massage + Old Town Coral Island half-day Sunset catamaran

Sustainability — Please Read

Phuket's reefs took a hard hit in 2024–25 from heat stress. You can help:

  • Never touch coral, even lightly
  • Refuse single-use plastic on boats (bring your own bottle)
  • Choose operators that respect the daily visitor caps at Maya Bay and Similan
  • Skip the shark-finning-linked shark fin soup at any restaurant

We only work with operators certified by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.
