Season alert

The Similan Islands National Park is only open 15 October to 15 May. Book November–March for the best conditions; February is peak visibility (30m+).

Day trip from Phuket

  • 1.5-hour drive to Khao Lak pier + 1-hour speedboat.
  • Two snorkel stops, lunch on Island 4 (Koh Miang), viewpoint hike on Island 8 (Koh Similan) with the famous Sail Rock.
  • Long day (5:30am pickup, 7pm return) but incredible.

Liveaboard — the serious upgrade

2 to 4 nights on a boat, 3–4 dives per day, including Koh Bon manta rays and Richelieu Rock (Thailand''s #1 dive site, whale sharks Feb–April).

Best operators leave from Khao Lak or Tap Lamu Pier. Budget from ฿22,000 for 3 days / 3 nights.

Snorkelling vs diving

  • Non-divers get 80% of the magic — visibility is often 20m even from the surface.
  • Kids 8+ handle the speedboat fine; under 8, choose a big-boat tour instead.

What you''ll see

  • Reef sharks (harmless), turtles, giant clams.
  • Schooling barracuda and trevally.
  • Whale sharks and manta rays Feb–April.

Book smart

  • National park fee ฿500 for foreigners — check it''s included.
  • No overnight camping on the Similans since 2018.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — enforced at the pier.
