Full Moon Party & Island Nightlife from Phuket
The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is a bucket-list Southeast Asian experience — 15,000–30,000 people, neon body paint, buckets of Sang Som, sunrise on Haad Rin beach. Combining it with a Phuket holiday takes planning because the two islands sit on opposite coasts of southern Thailand, but it is very doable and worth it.
When are the next Full Moon Parties?
One every lunar month, always on or within 1–2 days of the full moon. Never on major Buddhist holidays (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha), when it shifts back a day. Check the official Full Moon Party calendar before you book.
Getting from Phuket to Koh Phangan
Three realistic options:
- Fly + ferry (fastest, best). Phuket → Surat Thani (55 min flight) → Donsak pier taxi (1 hr) → Raja Ferry to Koh Phangan (2.5 hrs). About 6 hours door-to-door.
- Fly + speedboat. Phuket → Koh Samui (50 min, Bangkok Airways) → Lomprayah speedboat to Koh Phangan (30 min). Fastest but most expensive (~฿6,000+).
- Bus + ferry (cheapest). Overnight coach from Phuket bus terminal to Donsak, then ferry. ~13 hours. Only for die-hard backpackers.
Book return legs before you go — post-party ferry seats sell out.
Where to stay on Koh Phangan
- Haad Rin (the party beach): Loud, cheap, walk-home convenience. Book 3+ months ahead for full-moon weeks.
- Baan Tai / Ban Tai (5 min drive): Quieter, better sleep after 4am, cheap taxi to the party.
- Srithanu / Haad Yao (west coast): Yoga & wellness side of the island. For 3–4 night stays combining party with detox.
Surviving the night
- Wear closed shoes. Broken glass on the sand is real.
- Skip the buckets from anyone but established bars — spiked drinks happen.
- Buddy system. Agree a meeting spot for 3am and 6am.
- Cash only. ATMs run dry by midnight.
- Fire skipping rope = every year's emergency room stories. Don't.
Half Moon & Jungle Experience
If your dates don't match Full Moon, Koh Phangan also hosts:
- Half Moon Party (twice monthly, in the jungle, more electronic music, arguably better production).
- Jungle Experience (weekly, deep house, secret clearing venue).
Many travellers prefer these — smaller, better-curated, still very much a party.
Nightlife back in Phuket
If a full-blown island party is too much, Phuket's own scene delivers:
- Bangla Road (Patong) — the classic loud, chaotic strip.
- Illuzion Phuket — enormous superclub with global DJs.
- Café del Mar Phuket — beach club by day, dance floor by night.
- Baba Beach Club Natai — 45 min north of Phuket, more sophisticated crowd.
