What are the Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi is a small archipelago in the Andaman Sea, best known for Maya Bay (yes, from The Beach), soaring cliffs, and some of Thailand's clearest water.

Day trip or overnight?

Day trip (from Phuket or Krabi)

  • Pros: easy, no accommodation shuffle, covers Maya + Bamboo + snorkel stops.
  • Cons: you visit at peak-crowd hours.

Overnight (Phi Phi Don)

  • Pros: sunset and early-morning access before the crowds arrive; village vibe.
  • Cons: limited hotel choice; nightlife can be loud around Tonsai.

Our take: if you have 4+ nights on the Andaman and want the best Maya Bay experience, do one night on Phi Phi Don plus a private early-morning longtail. Otherwise a day trip is excellent value.

What to book

  • Speedboat day trip with Maya, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Bamboo Island — see our tours.
  • Sunset + plankton private longtail from Phi Phi Don.
  • Skip crowded packed catamarans — smaller boats are worth the upgrade.

Practical

  • Maya Bay entry is capped and closed periodically for reef recovery — book ahead.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only.
  • Motion-sensitive travellers should pre-medicate for the crossing.
