Short version: five days in Phuket is enough for two island trips, one culture day, one relaxed beach day and one flexible day. The plan below is what we book most often for first-time visitors: Phi Phi on day 2, Phang Nga Bay on day 4, Old Town and Big Buddha in between, and a sunset cruise to finish. Budget roughly 28,000–45,000 THB per person for five days including a mid-range hotel, tours and food.

Distances matter more than anything else in Phuket. The airport to Kata is 60–75 minutes in traffic, and piers sit on the opposite side of the island from most beaches, so the order of days below is built around drive times rather than a wish list.

Day 1: Arrive, settle, first sunset

Do not schedule a tour on arrival day. Land, transfer (pre-book — it is calmer and cheaper than an airport taxi), swim, then drive 30 minutes to Promthep Cape for sunset.

  • Stay: Kata or Karon for a balance of beach and quiet; Patong for nightlife; Bang Tao or Mai Khao for resort calm
  • Eat: grilled seafood at Rawai's fisherman market
  • Time cost: airport to Kata 60–75 min, to Bang Tao 30 min

Day 2: Phi Phi Islands

The biggest day, done early. Pick-up 07:30, back around 17:30. Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and snorkelling at Phi Phi Don with lunch included.

  • Why day 2: you are rested, and if weather cancels it you still have day 4 or 5 to reschedule
  • Bring: reef-safe sunscreen, dry bag, motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive
  • Alternative: swap in the Similan Islands if you care most about snorkelling (open mid-October to mid-May only)

Deeper detail in our Phi Phi day trip guide.

Day 3: Culture, viewpoints and Old Town

A land day gives your skin a break.

  1. 09:00 Big Buddha, then Wat Chalong
  2. 11:30 Karon or Windmill viewpoint for the three-bay photo
  3. 14:00 Old Phuket Town — Thalang Road shophouses, street art, Hokkien noodles at a 60-year-old shop
  4. 18:00 Chillva or the Sunday walking street if your day 3 falls on a Sunday

Day 4: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Calm, sheltered water and the most dramatic scenery in Southern Thailand. Sea canoes take you into hongs you cannot reach by boat, and lunch is served on board while cruising past Koh Panyee.

Follow it with a sunset dinner cruise or a show if you still have energy. Background reading: James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay.

Day 5: Slow morning, then fly

Thai massage, a cooking class, or one last beach hour. Keep three hours between check-out and an international flight, four in late December.

Three variants of the same five days

For couples

Swap day 3's viewpoints for a spa afternoon, replace the group Phi Phi boat with a private charter, and finish with a luxury sunset cruise. See the Phuket Luxury Escape.

For families

Replace Phi Phi with the shorter Khai Islands trip, add an ethical elephant sanctuary on day 3, and keep an afternoon free for Andamanda Water Park. Longer version: 7-day family itinerary and the Phuket Family Week package.

For first-timers on a budget

Keep the plan but use shared transfers, book Coral & Racha Islands instead of Similan, and eat at markets. That brings five days down to roughly 18,000–22,000 THB per person.

When to do this itinerary

November to April is high season: flat seas, all islands open, and hotels 30–60% more expensive. Late December to mid-February is the busiest window, so book boats 10–14 days ahead. May to October brings cheaper rooms and some cancelled boat days — see Phuket in November and our best beaches list for month-by-month notes.
