Why visit Phuket
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the gateway to the Andaman Sea. Powder-white beaches, limestone karsts, world-class diving, and a food scene that runs from beachside somtam carts to Michelin-recognised restaurants — it packs an entire holiday into one island.
Best time to visit
The dry season runs November to April, with the calmest seas and clearest skies from December to March. May–October brings the southwest monsoon: cheaper, greener, quieter, but with rougher seas on the west coast.
Where to stay
- Patong — nightlife, shopping, big-resort energy.
- Kata & Karon — family-friendly beaches with a relaxed vibe.
- Kamala & Surin — upscale resorts, calmer atmosphere.
- Old Phuket Town — Sino-Portuguese heritage, cafés, street art.
Top day trips from Phuket
- Phi Phi Islands — Maya Bay, Bamboo Island, snorkelling.
- James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay — sea canoes through hongs.
- Similan Islands — some of Thailand's best diving (Nov–May only).
- Coral & Racha Islands — quick escape with excellent snorkelling.
How many days do you need
Five to seven nights is the sweet spot: two beach days, two day-trip days, one Old Town / temple day, plus arrival and departure buffers. Combine with Krabi or Khao Lak for a longer trip.
Getting around
Grab and local taxis dominate; scooters are cheap but only recommended for confident riders. Private transfers are worth it between beaches and for day trips.
Insider tips
- Book Similan trips first — permits are capped and the park closes mid-May to mid-October.
- Sunset viewpoints: Promthep Cape and Karon Viewpoint.
- Save one evening for a Phuket Old Town food walk — the best value meal on the island.
