Phuket vs Krabi: Which Should You Visit?
It is the single most-asked question we get. Both are on the Andaman coast, share the same limestone-karst seascape, and are 2 hours apart by ferry — yet they attract completely different travellers. Here is the honest breakdown.
The 10-second answer
- Choose Phuket if you want variety, nightlife, big resorts, direct international flights, easier logistics with kids or older parents.
- Choose Krabi if you want dramatic scenery, quieter beaches, rock climbing, kayaking through mangroves, and a slower pace.
- Do both if you have 10+ days. It is genuinely the best of Thailand.
Scenery
Krabi wins. The Railay peninsula and Ao Nang's karst cliffs are one of Southeast Asia's most iconic landscapes. Phuket's scenery is beautiful but softer — rolling green hills, palm-lined beaches. For jaw-drop-per-square-metre, Krabi takes it.
Beaches
Tie. Phuket has more of them (30+) and easier access. Krabi has fewer but the accessible-only-by-boat ones (Railay West, Phra Nang, Tup) feel more special.
Nightlife & dining
Phuket wins by a mile. Michelin-recommended restaurants, Bangla Road, beach clubs (Café del Mar, Catch, Baba), rooftop bars in Phuket Town. Krabi has a couple of good beach bars in Ao Nang and… that's about it.
Activities
- Phuket: Big-boat island hopping, cabaret shows, Muay Thai, cooking classes, spas, golf, Old Town heritage walks.
- Krabi: World-class rock climbing at Railay, jungle kayaking through the Bor Thor caves, hot springs, Emerald Pool, Tiger Cave Temple (1,260 steps).
Getting there
Phuket wins. Phuket International has direct flights from 40+ cities including Europe and Australia. Krabi International is smaller — most travellers connect via Bangkok or fly to Phuket and take the 2-hour ferry.
Family friendliness
Phuket wins. More big resorts with kids' clubs, easier medical care, more variety when kids get bored, and better beach safety on the calm east and south coasts.
Cost
Krabi is 15–25% cheaper across hotels, food and tours — largely because the market is less international.
The verdict
First-time visitor with 5–7 days? Phuket. Second visit or scenery-first traveller? Krabi. Two weeks in Thailand? Fly into Phuket, spend 4 days, ferry to Krabi for 4 days, back to Phuket for the flight home. That combo delivers the best possible Andaman experience.
