1. Phi Phi Islands by speedboat

Why it is number one: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and the reef at Phi Phi Don in a single day. Nothing else near Phuket packs that much scenery into nine hours.

  • Leaves: 07:30–08:00 from your hotel, back around 17:30
  • Best months: November to April, when the Andaman is flat
  • Suits: first-timers, couples, confident swimmers
  • Watch out for: Maya Bay closes seasonally and crowds peak 10:00–12:00. Ask for an early-departure boat.

Prefer to stay overnight instead? Read our Phi Phi day trip guide before you book.

2. James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay sea canoe

Sheltered bay, so it runs when Phi Phi gets cancelled. Limestone karsts, hidden hongs you paddle into, and lunch on board while cruising past Koh Panyee.

  • Hours: about 9, mostly cruising rather than swimming
  • Suits: families with small children, non-swimmers, photographers
  • Local tip: the bay is calmest before 11:00 — early boats get the caves to themselves

More detail: James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay done right and the Phang Nga destination guide.

3. Similan Islands

The clearest water in Thailand, roughly 25–40 m visibility. It is a long day — a 90-minute road transfer each way plus 75 minutes on a speedboat — and the national park is closed mid-May to mid-October.

  • Suits: snorkellers and divers who do not mind an early start
  • Skip if: you get seasick easily or you are travelling with toddlers

Compare options in our Similan Islands guide.

4. Coral Island & Racha Island

The easy option: 15–35 minutes from Chalong pier, soft sand, calm bays, optional parasailing. Home by mid-afternoon, which makes it perfect for arrival day or a day with a late flight.

5. Khai Islands

Three tiny islands, shallow turquoise water, fish that swarm your feet. The cheapest way to get a proper island photo and the easiest with children under six.

6. Ethical elephant sanctuary

No riding, no shows — feeding, mud baths and observation only. Half a day, close to town, and the single most requested meaningful activity we arrange. Read our honest comparison: ethical elephant sanctuaries in Phuket.

7. Old Phuket Town

Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, Hokkien noodles and a Sunday walking street. Best done late afternoon into the evening when it cools down. Full walkthrough: Old Phuket Town guide.

8. Krabi Four Islands

Cross the bay for Railay-style limestone, Tup Island's sandbar and Chicken Island's reef. Long day, but it lets you see a second province without changing hotels. See the Krabi travel guide.

9. Private yacht or speedboat charter

Your itinerary, your timings, no queues at Maya Bay. From about 35,000 THB for the boat, which works out cheaper per head than group tickets for six or more people. See private charters.

How to sequence day trips over a week

Two boat days back-to-back is a mistake — the sun and salt catch up with you. Our standard rhythm:

  1. Day 1 arrive, beach, sunset
  2. Day 2 a big island day (Phi Phi or Similan)
  3. Day 3 land-based (elephants, Old Town, Big Buddha)
  4. Day 4 a second, gentler boat day (Phang Nga or Khai)
  5. Day 5 spa, shopping, sunset cruise

Want it planned around your flights? Our 5-day Phuket itinerary does exactly that, or see the Phuket Island Hopper package.

What day trips actually cost in 2026

The full breakdown with hidden fees is in Phuket tour prices & trip cost 2026. Short version: budget 2,000–2,500 THB per person per boat day in shared groups, plus 400–600 THB in national park fees on Phi Phi and Similan.

Booking a day trip in high season (Nov 2026 – Apr 2027)

  • Book island days 7–14 days ahead for late December to mid-February
  • Weather cancellations are refunded or moved — always book with an operator that reroutes you to Phang Nga
  • Confirm the pier: Rassada, Chalong and Royal Phuket Marina are up to an hour apart
  • Pick-up times are hotel-dependent; Patong is usually the last stop, Mai Khao the first
